Greek RES market
  • Greece is characterized by particularly low levels in the use of RES (the lowest in Europe), offering significant opportunities for robust and profitable investments to the companies operating in that market.
  • As regards the infrastructure of renewable energy sources, according to a recent survey, Greece holds the 13th place among 20 countries in Europe, despite the significant wind capacity and long periods of sunshine being a characteristic of its climate.
  • According to relevant feasibility studies, when preceded by proper planning and study, 30% of Greece’s needs in energy can be covered by wind and photovoltaic parks, when today only 2% (749 MW) of total energy in Greece comes from renewable energy sources.
  • Based on the relevant EU Directive, Greece has committed to ensure, by 2010, the generation of 20.1% of the required energy from RES on an annual basis, which imposes the installation of wind and photovoltaic parks with a total capacity of 3,000 MW within the next three years. Moreover, the new legislative framework specifies that the aforementioned percentages must reach 29% by 2020, and stipulates that the Hellenic Transmission System Operator (HTSO) must be supplied with RES generated power from investors at very attractive prices for the next 20 years.

Implementation of investment plan

Alpha Grissin Group is going to develop wind parks in Greece and Bulgaria, of total capacity 261MW and of a total investment that is going to reach €365mil.

The wind parks of Deutsche Aeolian SA will be constructed in southern Greece, and in particular in the prefecture of Arkadia, while the total investment is expected to exceed € 122 million. Investments in that region are subsidized by 40%. The implementation of the plan is currently at the stage of approval by the Ministry of Development and the Regulatory Authority for Energy (RAE).

The required statistic wind measurements in that region show particularly high potential, which ensures increased generation and highly satisfactory figures in terms of performance of the investment. At the same time, this specific region has been included in the physical planning of RES projects, which is expected to accelerate the procedure for project approval and their inclusion in the new law on energy generation from RES.

In Bulgaria, KARNOBAT AEOLIA AD was granted a 30-year concession to the Consortium of a land area of 8.424 hectares in the area of Karnobat in Central Bulgaria, an area with increased wind power, in order to develop and operate a wind park of 111MW. The final production licenses, of an investment budget of €155mil, are expected to be issued by the end of 2010.
